Taking off the tank, removing the battery, etc doesn't sound "lazy" to me.

The fuel needs to be stabilized due to modern pollution regulations in this country. The refineries can no longer add stabilizing agents that used to be routinely used because they (theoretically) cause more pollution. The normal "shelf life" of modern unleaded gasoline is about 3 months from the time it is refined. After that, the octane rating will decrease and "varnish" can precipitate out and clog your carb jets. As you can imagine, not being able to produce gasoline in periods of low use and store it for several months creates problems for the producers and is one cause of the fuel "shortages" in peak use periods.

Keep warm until it's riding season again.
